FAQs

Clio Family Dentistry

  • How often should I have a dental cleaning and exam?

We typically recommend professional cleanings and exams every six months for most patients. These regular visits are essential for removing tartar buildup that home care can't address and for early detection of issues like cavities or gum disease. For patients with a history of periodontal problems, heavy tartar accumulation, or certain health conditions, more frequent cleanings every three to four months may be necessary. We'll work with you to determine the most appropriate schedule for your oral health needs.
  • What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A standard cleaning, also known as prophylaxis, is a preventive measure for maintaining healthy gums. It involves removing plaque and tartar above the gumline, polishing teeth, and promoting overall oral health. In contrast, a deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is a therapeutic procedure for patients with gum disease. This more intensive treatment removes bacteria and tartar from below the gumline and along root surfaces. Deep cleanings are typically performed in sections under local anesthesia to prevent bone and tooth loss associated with periodontal disease.
  • How can I prevent cavities?

Cavity prevention involves a combination of good home care and professional dental support. To reduce your risk, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day to remove plaque between teeth, and limit consumption of sugary or acidic foods and drinks. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, and maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings. We may also recommend fluoride rinses or dental sealants for additional protection. Remember, effective cavity prevention is a collaborative effort between your at-home routine and our professional care.
  • Why are X-rays necessary, and are they safe?

Dental x-rays are crucial diagnostic tools that allow us to examine areas of your teeth, roots, and bone not visible during a visual inspection. They help us identify decay between teeth, bone loss, infections, and issues beneath old restorations, often before symptoms appear. At our practice, we utilize digital x-ray technology, which significantly reduces radiation exposure compared to traditional film. The radiation from a full set of dental x-rays is comparable to a few hours of natural background exposure, making them a safe and valuable part of your dental care.
  • What should I do if my tooth hurts?

Tooth pain can stem from various causes, including decay, cracks, infections, or gum inflammation. If you experience tooth pain, gently rinse with warm salt water, avoid chewing on the affected side, and use over-the-counter pain relievers as needed for temporary relief. However, it's crucial to contact our office promptly for an evaluation. Timely intervention often prevents minor issues from escalating into more serious and costly dental problems.
  • What insurances are you in network with?

We are in-network providers for Delta PPO, Cigna PPO, and ADN. For patients with other insurance plans, we can submit claims as an out-of-network provider. Our team is happy to assist you in understanding your coverage and maximizing your benefits.
  • Do you offer payment plans?

We understand that dental care can sometimes present unexpected costs. To help manage these expenses, we offer CareCredit® financing options. This service allows you to spread out payments over time, often with low monthly installments. Our knowledgeable front office staff can guide you through the application process during your visit, ensuring you leave with both your dental and financial needs addressed.
  • What do you offer to patients with no insurance?

For patients without insurance coverage, we provide a discount program designed to make routine dental care more accessible and affordable. This program includes monthly payment options for essential services such as exams, x-rays, and cleanings. Additionally, it offers a 10% discount on treatments. Our front office team would be pleased to assist you with enrollment and explain how this program can help you save on your dental care.
