How often should I have a dental cleaning and exam?
We typically recommend professional cleanings and exams every six months for most patients. These regular visits are essential for removing tartar buildup that home care can't address and for early detection of issues like cavities or gum disease. For patients with a history of periodontal problems, heavy tartar accumulation, or certain health conditions, more frequent cleanings every three to four months may be necessary. We'll work with you to determine the most appropriate schedule for your oral health needs. What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) is a preventive visit for healthy gums. It removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, polishes the teeth, and helps keep your mouth fresh and healthy. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is a therapeutic procedure for patients with gum disease. It goes below the gumline to remove bacteria and tartar from the root surfaces of teeth. Deep cleanings are usually done in sections of the mouth under local anesthesia and help prevent bone and tooth loss associated with periodontal disease. If you want to learn more about what a cleaning, filling, or dental implant at our clinic is like, reach out to our team for more information. How can I prevent cavities?
Cavities form when bacteria in plaque produce acids that erode enamel. We've found you can greatly reduce your risk by:- Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Flossing once a day to remove plaque between teeth
- Limiting sugary or acidic foods and drinks
- Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
- Visiting us for routine exams and cleanings
- Using fluoride mouth rinses or dental sealants if recommended
Why are X-rays necessary, and are they safe?
Dental X-rays allow us to see areas of your teeth, roots, and bone that aren't visible during a visual exam. They help detect decay between teeth, bone loss, infections, and problems under old fillings or crowns, often before you feel any symptoms. At Clio Family Dentistry, we use digital X-rays, which our observations find reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% compared to traditional film. The amount of radiation from a full set of dental X-rays is about the same as a few hours of natural background exposure outdoors, making them extremely safe. Are you thinking you may need a dental implant? Our dental X-rays can help show you any damage you may have. Schedule an appointment today! What should I do if my tooth hurts?
Tooth pain can have many causes: decay, a cracked tooth, infection, or even gum inflammation. If your tooth hurts, rinse gently with warm salt water, avoid chewing on that side, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. Call our office right away, so we can evaluate the cause. Prompt care often prevents a small issue from turning into a more serious (and more costly) problem. Rest assured, if a dental implant is necessary, Clio Family Dentistry ensures the process will be done with the utmost care. What insurances are you in network with?
